Tour Overview
The Shira Route is a less crowded Kilimanjaro ascent, starting on the western slopes and approaching via the Shira Plateau. This 7-day trek offers excellent acclimatization and breathtaking scenery, including expansive lava fields, high-altitude moorlands, and dramatic volcanic ridges.
The route is ideal for climbers who want a steady ascent with higher chances of summiting. Itinerary
Transfer from Moshi/Arusha to Londorossi Gate for registration. The trek begins with gentle slopes through montane forest, transitioning into open moorlands. Hike approximately 4–5 hours to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m). Enjoy panoramic views of the plateau and the nearby peaks. Dinner and overnight at the campsite.
Trek across the Shira Plateau, passing lava formations, giant heathers, and wide vistas of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers. Ascend gradually over 5–6 hours to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m). This camp offers excellent acclimatization and stunning sunset views of Kibo Peak.
Begin with a steady ascent to Lava Tower (4,630m), a high-altitude acclimatization point. After a scenic lunch at the tower, descend gradually to Barranco Camp (3,960m), located beneath the Barranco Wall. Enjoy panoramic views of glaciers, valleys, and the surrounding alpine desert.
Start the day by climbing the Barranco Wall, a thrilling scramble offering unmatched views. Descend into alpine desert terrain and follow ridgelines to Karanga Camp (4,035m). This shorter day is perfect for acclimatization and resting before the summit attempt.
Hike to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the final base for the summit push. Enjoy the dramatic vistas of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks while preparing your gear for the night ascent. Dinner and rest in preparation for the early summit climb.
Begin the summit climb around midnight, trekking slowly under the stars. Reach Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Africa’s highest point. Descend carefully to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for well-deserved rest and overnight.
Final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the completion of your Shira Route adventure.
