Tour Overview
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenya border. Known for its drier climate, this route is ideal for travelers seeking a quieter climb with less crowded trails. The trek passes through savanna and moorland landscapes before entering alpine desert and culminating at Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
This 7-day itinerary allows proper acclimatization, increasing your chances of a successful summit. Trekkers will enjoy panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s northern glaciers, vast plains, and the majestic Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Itinerary
Transfer from Moshi/Arusha to Rongai Gate for registration. Begin the trek through rolling savanna, spotting wildlife and indigenous flora. Hike approximately 4–5 hours to Simba Camp (2,600m), surrounded by stunning northern mountain views. Dinner and overnight at the campsite.
Ascend steadily into the lush forest and heath zones. The trail offers breathtaking vistas of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Trekking for 5–6 hours, you reach Second Cave Camp (3,600m). This camp provides spectacular sunset views and a comfortable acclimatization stop.
Leave forested areas behind and enter moorland and alpine desert. Giant lobelias and groundsels line the trail, while distant glaciers come into view. After 5–6 hours of hiking, arrive at Kikelewa Camp (4,200m), ideal for rest and acclimatization before summit night.
Trek towards Mawenzi Tarn for stunning panoramic views. The trail undulates across barren alpine desert and rocky ridges. After approximately 5–6 hours, reach School Hut Camp (4,750m), the final camp before the summit. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the night ascent.
Begin the summit climb around midnight. Trek slowly under the starry sky, reaching Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate your achievement and descend carefully to Kibo Camp (4,700m) for a short rest.
Descend through alpine desert and heath zones, enjoying final views of glaciers and volcanic landscapes. After 5–6 hours of trekking, arrive at Horombo Camp (3,720m) for dinner and overnight. Reflect on the summit achievement and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for onward travel, marking the end of the Rongai Route adventure.
