Tour Overview
The Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the most established and traditional path to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. This 6-day Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary is unique as it offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it ideal for climbers who prefer more comfort while trekking.
The route follows a steady gradient, passing through rainforest, heathland, moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the glaciers of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. With permanent sleeping huts, dining shelters, and a direct ascent and descent path, the Marangu Route is well suited for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers seeking a structured and classic summit experience, fully supported by Wildmyth Adventures’ professional mountain team.
Itinerary
After breakfast, transfer to Marangu Gate for registration and climb briefing. The trek begins through lush rainforest filled with towering trees, colorful birds, and colobus monkeys. The trail is gentle and well maintained, making this a relaxed introduction to Kilimanjaro trekking. After several hours, arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail opens into heath and moorland with wide views of the surrounding landscape. Giant lobelias and groundsels appear as altitude increases. On clear days, both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks become visible. This day plays an important role in acclimatization.
This day is dedicated to acclimatization to improve summit success. You will take a guided hike towards Zebra Rocks and higher elevations before returning to Horombo Hut. The “walk high, sleep low” approach allows your body to adjust while conserving energy. Afternoon rest and hydration are essential.
The trek continues across the stark alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes rocky and barren, and temperatures drop noticeably. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare your gear for the summit attempt later that night.
Around midnight, you begin the summit ascent. The climb is slow and steady, reaching Gilman’s Point at sunrise before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut.
After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate before transferring to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro journey.
