Itinerary
After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to Machame Gate for registration and a full climb briefing. The trek begins through dense tropical rainforest, where towering trees, hanging moss, and rich birdlife dominate the landscape. The trail is scenic but can be muddy, offering your first true Kilimanjaro trekking experience. This day allows your body to begin adjusting gradually to altitude while enjoying the cool forest climate.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail ascends steadily into heath and moorland. Vegetation changes dramatically, opening wide views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. Giant lobelias and heather plants surround the path as temperatures begin to drop. This day is crucial for acclimatization, and guides ensure a slow, steady pace.
This is a key acclimatization day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. You ascend gradually to Lava Tower at 4,630m, where altitude effects may be felt. After lunch at high altitude, you descend to Barranco Camp, located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall. The descent helps your body adapt while offering spectacular views of glaciers and valleys.
The day begins with the exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall, a non-technical scramble requiring balance and confidence. Once above the wall, panoramic views open across the southern ice fields of Kilimanjaro. The trail continues through alpine desert terrain before reaching Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows for rest and further acclimatization.
Today’s trek leads to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly barren and rocky, with strong winds and dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak. Upon arrival, you rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the night ascent. An early dinner is served before you sleep briefly ahead of summit night.
Around midnight, you begin the most challenging and rewarding part of the climb. Trekking slowly under the stars, you ascend to Stella Point at sunrise and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebrations, you descend carefully back to Barafu Camp, then continue to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.
After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate. You will then be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of an unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
